Plumbing isn’t something that most home owners like to get involved with. Whenever a plumbing issue crops up, they prefer letting the professional handle the issue. But the more important point is that there are many simple things that you can do in the house which would prevent plumbing problems from arising in the first place. Here are four plumbing tips that no one tells you about.
Avoid clogging of the drain
A drain being clogged is one of the most frequently occurring issues in a home’s plumbing. And you will probably have a hard time clearing the problem. But the good news is that there’s a way out-no, not by deciding not to do anything about it and wishing it will go away by itself. Not necessarily. Rather, you can try and prevent the clogging.
And one way to do that is by not dumping starch-rich products-like potatoes, bread, rice or coffee grounds down the drain. The problem is that starch will transform into a paste and this paste will clog the drain. And coffee grounds poses the problem of attracting grease and build-up. In the case of potatoes, smaller chunks probably won’t be an issue but peeling a dozen of them and you try to dump all that peel down the skin is so not advisable!
Limit the corrosion of water lines
It’s possible that with time, galvanized water lines could corrode or rush shut. In fact, it’s more than possible, it’s gonna happen. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to hasten the process. By choosing the right type of lines, you can slow down the process. Copper lines are the best option. Don’t mind that it’s not gold or silver, in this case it certainly comes first. There are PEX and plastic pipes available in the market. These might be enticing because they are way less expensive than copper. However, neither are they as durable as copper lines nor do they perform as well.
Avoid cheap fixtures
You know the saying: Necessity is the mother of invention. In the case of cheap fixtures, the necessity is to bypass the obviously cheap appearance of the material with which it’s made. This means that the designers may work extra-hard to give it a stylish appearance, though it must be said that sometimes, the result even though unorthodox is far from stylish. Anyway, even if it’s smart in appearance, don’t go for it for such fixtures will break. Better products would be more expensive but they make sense in the long term.
Find where the clean-outs are
The clean-outs are nothing but the access to the sewer line. It’s important to know where these are located since in case of blockages etc., the plumber may need to know the location. Now, as we all know, very little number of house owners actually know where these are located, and if you are one of them, you better try and pinpoint where they are at.
